Congratulations to fellow Needham resident for her outstanding performance at the 2012 London Olympics. Our town is so proud of her. There are signs everywhere including a large banner hanging in front of the Needham Town Hall. Last week, the town hall live streamed Aly in the all around performance. Hundreds of fans showed up to watch Aly's performance including two of her grandparents. The local supermarket is even selling cookies and cakes in Aly's honor.
It's a great accomplishment that Aly won two gold medals and a bronze medal. Even more impressive is to see what a great role model she is and how she is handling her success. During one of the competitons, she is seen on the sidelines encouraging fellow gold medalist Gabby Douglas. Aly, the team captain, tells Gabby, "You can do this." When Aly tied for third in the all around competition and then ended up in fourth place due to a tie breaker, she was a good sport about it and moved on to the next competition. Again, she was tied for third place in the individual balance beam competition. This time, the tie breaker swung in her favor and she won the bronze medal. Next up, Aly won a gold medal for her floor routine. Her coach told her is was the best routine she's ever done. The lesson: Do your best. Don't get discouraged if the outcome is not what you hoped and keep working until you get that gold medal.
Many of the articles that I have read mention how hard Aly worked to get to this level. She completed her senior year at Needham High School online so that she could spend full days working out at the gym. I have been following her on twitter and most of her tweets thank everyone for supporting her and she expresses her gratitude to her coach and her parents. For example, this is her tweet today: “Thank you to my amazing parents! Love them so much. So thankful for
their love & support all these years. I couldn’t ask for better
parents.” Aly, thanks for making Needham proud and congratulations on your accomplishments!
